What Is TOE WALKING

Toe walking is typical for new walkers, but persistent toe walking after age 2 is not. It may be caused by habit, sensory preferences, tight muscles, coordination challenges, or neurological differences. Long-term toe walking may lead to muscle tightening, pain, balance issues, or difficulty keeping up with peers.

When to Seek Help for Toe Walking

Seek an evaluation if your child:

  • Walks on toes after age 2
  • Cannot put heels down easily
  • Has tight calves or limited ankle motion
  • Falls or fatigues easily
  • Complains of leg or foot pain
  • Struggles with balance or coordination
  • Shows sensory-seeking or sensory-avoidant behaviors

How All Abilities Can Help With Toe Walking

We determine the cause and create a targeted plan that may include stretching, strengthening, balance activities, gait training, sensory strategies, and home exercises. Early therapy helps prevent long-term stiffness and reduces the need for casting or surgery.
